Nutrition
Total parenteral nutrition or TPN is given when a person cannot eat normally because the small intestine or bowel is not working properly or has had surgery to remove all or part of it. It involves receiving liquid nutrition through an intravenous catheter in the chest or arm. Given for long or short term therapy, it provides all of the patients nutrition needs (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals) while they cannot eat normally.
Enteral nutrition is given when a person cannot eat any or enough normally due to a decreased appetite, illness, difficulty swallowing or surgery that has interfered with the eating. A tube is placed in the stomach or small bowel (via the nose- nasogastric, stomach- gastrostomy, or small bowel- jejunostomy) allowing nutrition to be given to the patient that includes proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, fats and vitamins.
IV Services offers customizable nutrition plans based on the patient’s needs. Please contact us for further information.
